For Port, the 1970 vintage was absolutely superb and universally declared.

The growing season began with a chilly winter which allowed the vines to truly hibernate and rest, although icy weather continued into the spring and yields were cut during flowering. However, the summer months then delivered plenty of hot, dry weather which helped bring the fruit to phenolic ripeness, although, by the end of the growing season, some grapes had begun to raisin. Fortunately cool nights helped to preserve the acidity in the fruit as well as their fresh fruit character while bringing the pace of ripening back under control.

The resulting wines are widely considered to be excellent and, as a result, the 1970 vintage is considered one of Port‘s finest. The classic-structured and well-balanced character of the wines meant that the vintage was widely declared and most, if not all, of the major Port houses released a wine.

Overall, the 1970 vintage for Port was legendary and there should still be a wide range of wines drinking brilliantly now. Although careful research is recommended, it would, in this instance, be hard to go wrong.
