1998 Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley, USA

£275.00

I got hold of 3 of these and could not resist drinking one!! It was the star of the tasting, absolutely in its window with plenty of time to come, fully justifying the recent very high cellar tracker reviews. Special stuff indeed.

A very old world Bordeaux style in Napa… the Napa I can get behind. A nose of cedar, eucalyptus, juniper, blackberry that was largely mirrored in the palate. That cedar and eucalyptus was by far the most dominant but but created a great foundation for so much complexity. Really great length and structure, this was a delicious wine and a Christmas Eve treat.

  • “Off” Vintages from Elite Producers: (Petrus, Lafite, Margaux, etc) (Charlotte, NC): 30 min decant at 7:30am. Back in the bottle, corked, and placed in the fridge until arrival.Cork pulled upon arrival for dinner at 6:30pm before serving at 9:00pm. Sourced directly from the winery.
Rustic and aromatic “Old World” nose (cedar and dark fruits) signaling something special in the glass. Confirmed on the palate this wine had a delightful balance between dark cherries. Blackberries, and black currants. A tasty long finish topped the experience off. Wonderful structure delivered this full-bodied wine with a deft elegance – Old World craftsmanship wrapped in New World juice. Likely the best 1998 Napa Cabernet I have consumed.

It is a cold snowy night and the local neighborhood power is out. So thanking God we had the foresight to install a generator. And celebrating with this bottle in gratitude. Cork pulled with an ah-so and it was pristine with only a 1/8 inch run and the bottle fill was 1/2 inch below the cork. Aromas of cedar, currants , damp earth and even a little Bordeaux style funk were present. It took a couple of hours but this is finally opening nicely on the palate. Brooding blackberry fruit predominates, the mouth feel is excellent and though the finish is subtle it lasts a long 30 seconds. Some prior reviews by others were suggesting that this wine was over the hill 5-10 years ago and I found that confusing. This wine is not the best Dominus I have ever tasted but it is delicious and still in a good drinking window from my perspective. Enjoy it now and even for another five years with good storage.

Just about perfect. Really at the sweet spot of fruit, structure and tertiary. Is still BlackBerry fruit dominant – just! Lots of glorious vanilla oak and fresh leather. Very long, complex. Drink now.
