Description
Vega Sicilia is perhaps Spain’s most revered estate and has a global reputation for consistently producing exceptionally high-quality red wines with extraordinary capacity to age. Único is the flagship wine and is a blend of mostly Tempranillo with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and is aged for almost 6 years in oak and 4 years in bottle before release. Here is an exciting find from 1976. Aged Único often drinks like fine Bordeaux with rich black fruits, incredible savoury nuance and wonderfully silky texture.

Had it with Yves & Lynn for NY’s eve 2020. The nose was amazing, forest floor, mushrooms, leather, tobacco, still red fruits. It opened up 2 hrs after decanting to show very rich, deep wine, loved it!

Decanted to serve. Sandalwood, tobacco leaf, cinnamon and graphite. Palate was elegant and light on its feet. With air, it later added more power and depth. Good classic vega.

Vega Sicilia Unico Vertical 1953-1994 (Hosted by Cedric at Eleven Madison Park) : More akin to the 1973 than the 1970. Super-silky tannins. Beautiful freshness and acidity. Red fruit with some roses and red cherries.

Rich and drinking young. Nicely integrated. This wine is aging at a glacial pace. Good red berries, cherries, strawberries. Bottle is directly from the winery and in perfect condition. Very enjoyable and has plenty of life ahead.

Started thin and unexpressive but picked up some speed with air time. Light liquorice notes saved the nose. Unobjectionable but not distinguished. 91-

MNSC – PP : opened 1 hour before decanting and serving. soaring nose of candy and burnt sugar. rich, creamy and exotic. hedonistic stuff.
