1985 Joseph Drouhin Aloxe-Corton, Cote de Beaune, France

£85.00

1985 was a legendary vintage so hope springs eternal. The labels are a bit bashed about and old, but the wine is a decent colour and level.

Description

    • Producer tasting notes: (1985 vintage) “”A well-structured wine, without any hardness. Beautiful intense red colour. Powerful nose, with aromas of candied fruit, evolving with age towards spicy and musky aromas. A solid framework is felt on the palate. Long aftertaste with flavours reminiscent of the same candied fruit aromas”.” – Joseph Drouhin

Burgundy enjoyed an exceptionally fine vintage in 1985.

Both winter and spring experienced intensely cold and frosty conditions with temperatures in January dropping at one point to -30C (-22F). The frosts did cause some damage and delay flowering, particularly in the Côte de Nuits and Chablis. However, the weather picked up in both June and July as a warm summer settled in. By late summer, hot, dry conditions close to drought were being felt with barely any rain in both August and September. However, August did see a hailstorm strike the vineyards of Aloxe-Corton, causing considerable damage. September was dry and sunny, ripening the grapes while keeping them disease-free.

The resulting wines, both red and white, were beautifully balanced in general. A few peaked early but there were some that were and remain extremely ageworthy, particularly among the reds.

There should still be some wines, primarily reds, from the top estates still drinking well now but be prepared to pay top dollar.
