1978 Chateau Talbot

£115.00

A very nicely presented 1978 Talbot in its original wooden box with great levels. A lovely gift.

Description

Drank “leftovers” from a friend, bottle opened 24 hours earlier. Almost half left, transported by car during 30 minutes. According to friend, nose somewhat evolved compared with the previous evening. Delightfull mouthfull of fresh, elegant and smooth wine. Far from dead, even after 24 “rough” hours for an aged wine. Nice surprise!

Loic and Peta bye bye – battle of Australia vs France (Strand Cellars, Croydon): “Served blind.
Red and black hued fruits, fruit tea, green capsicum, touch of yeast extract, soy, forest floor. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, red and black fruits, forest floor, earth, fully resolved tannins offer a slight rasp that grows with time, fruit tea, forest floor, slight umami notes.
I knew what this was but not the vintage so I went for 1976”

Open in the bottle for about four hours, it needs the time. Nose is very smoky and peppery, beef broth and black pepper. Palate is really smooth and quite rich. Great acidity, tannins all gone but there’s still fruit and charred oak with grape leaf. Not quite as expressive as the last bottle but still super delicious. Great with a nice marble-y steak but starting to be time to drink up I think.024 – Amberissey Likes this wine:91 Points

Great deep concentrated colour, only a little variation. Smoke, tobacco leaf, roasted green peppers, black shoe polish. What a classic aged Bordeaux nose. The peppers and polish present on the palate alongside a dry black or blue berry jam, like it has no sweetness in it. Unbelievably smooth.

Stood up a week prior. Opened an hour in advance. Cork broke upon opening. Decanted for sediment. A medium ruby core fading to a medium garnet outer edge. Grilled green peppers, stewed tomatoes, black shoe polish, wild hedgerow, and blackberry jam. Structurally resolved with a flick of acidity keeping the wine fresh. Excellent.s

Barbecue with Katja and Alex, and I did not take formal notes, but this was another great bottle, the best bottle yet. Bottle filled into the neck, cork intact. Red fruit, ripe strawberry, cherry, plum, cedar, leather, tobacco leaf, spices, and balsamic notes, with good, medium-level acidity, fully resolved tannin, and very good length. Smoothly textured and well balanced, with light old-age sweetness. Transitioned to a darker, more earthy profile with sous-bois and dark leafy notes as it breathed in the glass. A great Bordeaux! Fully mature, drink now.
