Wine Profile and Reviews
The 1989 Late Harvest Riesling has been noted by critics and reviewers for its impressive longevity and quality decades after its vintage year.
  • Style: It is an off-dry or sweet Riesling in a softer style. It is a dessert wine, often referred to as “pudding wine”.
  • Aging: Reviewers in the late 1990s noted that it was “standing up well” and “amazingly fresh” for its age, defying expectations that it might be past its prime. This suggests a good balance of acidity and sweetness, which is characteristic of quality late harvest Rieslings.
  • Winery: The wine was produced by Redwood Valley Estate, a winery located in the Nelson region of New Zealand. The vineyards were first planted in 1979 and are known for producing fruit with fantastic depth and complex flavors. The site is now part of the Seifried Estate, which still produces a highly-rated late harvest Riesling, the “Sweet Agnes,” from the same vineyard.

Before posting this we have just enjoyed a glass of this with coffee and a sweet shortbread biscuit, the above is AI!!!!! As suggested this wine is still fresh from the acidity that all great pudding wines have and not at all sickly, the nose is caramel, toffee and sweet fruit. The wine coats the palate and still has length with a tangy, honeyed sensation. There is caramel as well that would push you towards Loire chenin in a blind tasting. These characteristics would be lovely with a Creme Brulée!! Happy Birthday!
