Description
A number of grape varieties are authorized for use in Extremadura wines. The principal ones are Alarijen, Cayetana, Garnacha, Pardina (Albillo), Tempranillo and Macabeo. Minor varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Bobal, Parellada and Verdejo.
The climate varies across the region from coastal in the west with Atlantic influences, through to continental further inland to the east. The moist winds from the ocean distinguish the region from other parts of Spain, carrying vital moisture.
Lengthy sunshine hours are another boon for Extremadura, allowing vines to fully ripen their grapes. Vines grow amongst the native fauna such as deer and wild pigs, and the Quercus suber (cork oak) trees for which the region is perhaps better known.
