1996 Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz, Coonawarra, Australia, 2 bottles

Description

    • Critic tasting note: (1996 vintage) “Pitch black. Lush, high-toned aromas of currant, blackberry and oaky-smoke; fine and pure. Quite tannic and austere now, actually palate-numbing, but a hint of fully ripened dark stone fruit suggests aging potential. From a cooler region.” – Wine Enthusiast

Cork, 13.5% alc. Medium Ruby Garnet. Fading pink at the rim.

Mint, raspberry, and blackcurrant, overlaid with leather, boot polish and some decaying leaves. Licorice uplift in the background.
Supple palate of medium weight, with fresh acidity and resolved, fine dusty tannins. Soy sauce and balsamic woody oak elements emerge on the palate. Finishing shorter than medium length, with tiring fruit. Day two update: looks fresher with more vibrant plum and milk chocolate fruit.

Opinion: A gentle, aged Penfolds Shiraz showing well for 27 years old in spite of its humble beginnings.
