Vintage quality: Legendary
Current condition: Ready to drink
The 1998 Australian vintage was a massive success, particularly for the Barossa.
A cool spring gave way to a long, hot and dry summer. The dry conditions helped keep rot and disease at bay while a touch of rain at the end of the growing season relieved dehydrated grapes.
As a result, the wines tended to be concentrated with pure fruit without being overblown or losing their structure or refinement.
Some great examples of Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz were made and the Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale all performed very well. However, most regions delivered with plenty of great wines made.
There should be a wide range of wines, both red and white, from all over the country still drinking well now.
