Dark cherry, violet, some pepper, warm spice, touch of mocha and cedar on nose. Palate dark cherries, some blackcurrant with some oak, graphite and perhaps a hint of something meaty? Nicely balanced. Would be keen to try with more age.

2014 Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet Ermitage was complex, structured and mineral-driven. The developing Ermitage Syrah was deep ruby in colour with a noticeable amount of fine sediments. It took three hours of in-bottle aeration to open up an impressive aromatic spectrum of smoked beef, black pepper and earth, together with blackberry, black plum, crushed violet, lavender and vanilla.
The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with a high level of structured tannin and a medium level of balanced acidity. The sense of crushed rock minerals and fine spices were captivating. Flavours of cassis and black olives transitioned to smoke, tilted soil and Assam black tea in a long, sophisticated finish. The civilised 13.5% alcohol defied its depth and ripe fruit tones. The empty bottle weighed 647 grams. The quality was admirable, when considering the fruit fly infestation and September rain in the 2014 vintage.
The Syrah vines are cultivated on the lieu-dit called Les Dionnières at the foot of the eastern half of the Hermitage hill. The soil is composed of alluvial deposit and glacial stones. The wine is raised in equal parts of new and used oak barrels for twenty four months.

2014 Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet Ermitage was layered, savoury and mineral-driven. The developing Ermitage was clear and deep purple in colour with noticeable amount of fine sediments. It took two hours of in-bottle aeration to open up impressive aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed violet and lavender. Underneath were notes of liqourice, black olives and beef stew.
The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with medium level of balancing acidity and high level of structured, gripping tannin. Flavours of cassis, black pepper spices, smoke, crushed rocks and Pu’er black tea persisted in a long, mineral-driven finish. The alcohol level was at 13.5%. It was particularly admirable, considering the rampant fruit flies and September rain of the challenging 2014 vintage.
According to Livingstone’s Rhône guide, the Syrah vines were grown on Diognières (near the foot of the Hermitage hill on the Eastern end). The wine was aged in a combination of new (50%) and one-year-old (50%) oak barrels for about one year.
