2005 Achaval Ferrer Quimera, Mendoza, Argentina, 3 Bottles

£185.00

3 Great bottles from this vineyard famous for leading the way at the turn of the century. Achaval Ferrer was founded by a group of Argentinian and Italian friends who loved wine and were determined to produce something outstanding – an aim encouraged by celebrated Italian oenologist Roberto Cipresso, one of the founding team. A slice of history, this Malbec based Bordeaux blend is still knocking it out the park. I have more of this if required!!

Description

The Quimera is the pinnacle from Achaval Ferrer and is a Malbec-dominant, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend, with the proportions changing dependent on vintage.

92 pts. A stunning 20-year-old bottle held in my cellar since 2008. This 2005 Quimera has aged with incredible grace, outperforming its successors in terms of sheer vibrancy.
Tasting Notes: Unlike the 2006 and 2007, which leaned into earth and chocolate, this 2005 still bursts with classic Malbec flavors: fresh blackberries and blueberries on both the nose and palate. The most striking feature is a prominent black pepper finish that adds a fantastic contrast to the fruit. The tannins are smooth, and the wine feels cohesive and alive.
While it likely had another 2 years of life left, it is in a beautiful place right now. An absolute elixir that was well worth the two-decade wait.
A blend of 37% Malbec, 28% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged 12 months in French oak (40% new).
