Description
I have listed recent cellar trackers that all have aspects I agree with. It had a tremendous colour for the age, a lovely claret nose, decent fruit some of which had a trace of 1978 greenness which would have led me to guess 1978 as the year. It could have gone on a little longer on the palate. But overall a very good showing and a very interesting and enjoyable bottle.

Poured a clear terracotta. Funky barnyard nose with prunes at first slowly giving way after several hours to autumn leaves and earthy, leathery notes with dried orange peel. Sour cherry prominent on the front to mid-palate with vestiges of tertiary fruit. Medium-length finish with some residual tannic grip. This wine is well into its twilight years but still giving pleasure. Paired well with aged cheese.

Medium deep brick red.
Aromas of cassis, tobacco, cedar, carraway seed, pine wood and a hint of mint.
Medium body. Dry sanded tannins. Blackcurrant acids and walnut bitterness.
Palate of prune, cassis, roasted nuts, black tea, cedar and forest floor.
A mature, typical and rustic Medoc with fading dark fruit, elevated tannins, slightly off balance and fine mineral finish. Drink now. Tasted 2024.

Stood up 24 hours in advance. Opened seven hours prior. Mid to upper shoulder. Signs of seepage. Cork in fine shape and extracted in one piece. A medium garnet core fading to a pale garnet outer edge. Aromas of really tart red and black berries, black shoe polish, and damp green herbs, There’s a deep, heady quality to the nose, which is a delight. As for the palate it displays the structural qualities this vintage is renowned for coupled with ample concentration and persistence. Finishes with charred embers. Excellent.

Wild slightly underripe berries, balsamic, wild herbs, now ripe blackcurrant, wet wood, like wooden decking after the rain. Such a complex nose. Amazing fruit on the palette, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, with outstanding delineation. Some savouriness too. The last flavour that remains for a long time is charcoal embers. In the third glass it had become even richer on the palette. This is a spectacular bottle, i think the best I’ve ever had. This was an auction purchase for £54 including fees and delivery, I cannot believe how lucky I’ve been with this bottle. Utterly sensational.
