2004 Achaval Ferrer Quimera, Mendoza, Argentina, 3 Bottles

£255.00

3 Great bottles from this vineyard famous for leading the way at the turn of the century. Achaval Ferrer was founded by a group of Argentinian and Italian friends who loved wine and were determined to produce something outstanding – an aim encouraged by celebrated Italian oenologist Roberto Cipresso, one of the founding team. A slice of history, this Malbec based Bordeaux blend has been reaching over £150 a bottle!! I have more of these if anyone is planning a party!!

Description

The Quimera is the pinnacle from Achaval Ferrer and is a Malbec-dominant, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend, with the proportions changing dependent on vintage.

Clarety cigar box nose, cedar wood, at first the palate was a little flat, have I opened it too late etc? After a couple of hours it really opened up, dark fruit, savoury, incense, more cedar.                   With a lovely bit of sirloin.

A quiet strength emanates from this wine with aromas of plums and spices. A silky structure on the palate with velvety finesse tannins. To drink and redrink without moderation for such a low price.

fruit still to the fore and needs a bit of air to settle – quite delicious but not my favourite grape
