1996 Marcarini Brunate, Barolo DOCG, Italy, Magnum
£195.00
Magnificient Barolo from one of my favourite producers, I had a bit of the 1999, sadly drunk. However I have 2 of these but probably not for long. They will make stunning presents.

From our cellar. Bought on release. Our first of three bottles. Decided to go ahead and give this 28 year old Barolo a try. Cork was in great shape, perfect bottle fill, decanted for 45 minutes and drank over several hours. The color was a nice, clear, garnet-red with orange tint along the edges. Nose was subtle with whiffs of red berries, roses, tobacco. Medium bodied, elegant, smooth. Flavors of strawberry, cherry, vanilla, spice, tobacco, hay and underbrush. Nice and dry, good acidity, still some tannins. Very approachable and drinkable at this stage. Fairly complex with good length, but the finish was fairly short. A classic old style Barolo. Went great with eggplant parmigiana. Not a stellar wine at this stage, but still excellent and with plenty of life left. The palate evolved and enhanced with time. We wanted to save a glass to try the following day, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. 🙂 Went from 90-92pts over the course of the evening.

Got served a tiny tiny pour at the Danish Blind Tasting Championship 2021.
Delicate garnet in the glass with quite the orange tones.
The nose is forrest floor, tobacco and dried cherries.
The taste was acidic with some dusty red berries and dried florals. It might have peaked. But honestly hard to really assess from such a small pour.
Served blind I immediately knew it was old Nebbiolo.

Good showing. Good body, balanced, mellow tannins on the finish.
